When Captain Jack Steidl needed to refresh after piloting United Airlines jets around the world, he came to Lana’i, a tiny island in the Hawaiian chain; a serene and quiet place shaded by huge Cook pines; where people were friendly, the air sweet and balmy, and the pace a welcome relief from the rush and roar of jets. In 1980, he acquired a home built by one of the executive managers with the Dole Pineapple Company, at that time, the largest pineapple plantation in the world.
